Rani Mukerji is set to return as Officer Shivani Shivaji Roy in the third installment of the Mardaani film franchise. Celebrating a decade since the release of the original Mardaani, Yash Raj Films (YRF) recently announced that Mardaani 3 is officially in the works.
YRF announced Rani Mukerji’s Mardaani 3
Mardaani 3 will continue the legacy of the franchise, which is known for its action-packed depiction of a female lead in a traditionally male-dominated genre. The announcement video, celebrating the 10-year milestone of Mardaani, teases the new installment.
In the video’s caption, YRF expressed their gratitude by stating, “10 years of #Mardaani and the next chapter awaits… Celebrating the feisty, daredevil cop #ShivaniShivajiRoy and the spirit of #Mardaani today. Thank you for a decade of love and appreciation for our beloved franchise. We are inspired… again… thanks to you.”
Details about the plot and production of Mardaani 3 remain under wraps. However, fans can expect Mukerji to reprise her role with the same vigor and intensity that defined her performance in the earlier films. The franchise, which began in 2014, has seen significant success both critically and commercially.
The second installment, Mardaani 2 (2019), continued the story with Mukerji reprising her role as Officer Roy. Gopi Puthran’s directorial saw Shivani Shivaji Roy hunting down a young and ruthless criminal, a role that garnered widespread acclaim.
Reflecting on her role in Mardaani, Rani Mukerji once shared in an interview, “I think the 33 percent reserved positions for women Police, especially in Mumbai and Gujarat need to be filled up as soon as possible and I strongly appeal that more women come forward and fill these positions and work for a cause. My intention behind doing this film was to inspire women.”
As of now, the release date for Mardaani 3 has yet to be confirmed. However, industry insiders speculate that it will be in late 2025 or early 2026.
