Maharaj Movie Review: Fans React to Junaid Khan’s Debut

Aamir Khan’s son, Junaid Khan, has finally made his Bollywood acting debut. His film, Maharaj, was released on Netflix on June 21, 2024. The movie is based on the story of the Maharaj Libel Case of 1862. The plot revolves around the life of journalist and reformer Karsandas Mulji, played by Junaid. He fought the case against the spiritual leader, JJ, played by Jaideep Ahlawat, in the Supreme Court of Bombay.

Before its release, Maharaj faced multiple roadblocks. However, after the Gujarat High Court lifted a stay order on the movie’s release, it premiered on the streaming giant. In addition to Junaid Khan and Jaideep Ahlawat, the film stars Shalini Pandey, Sharvari Wagh, Jay Upadhyay, Sneha Desai, and others as supporting characters. Now, netizens have taken to social media to share their review of the movie.

Fans review Netflix movie Maharaj

After Maharaj’s premiere on Netflix, fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to react to and review the film. There have been mixed reactions from the audiences. While many enjoyed Junaid Khan’s debut movie, others found the courtroom drama lagging.

In their Maharaj film review, an X user wrote, “WHY is it on OTT? I’m not over rating it. We need to support such books and movies. We shouldn’t be ashamed to accept mistakes and reform. SUCH movie is extremely needed on big screen. If there is any wrong custom in our home/ religion, we need to introspect and reform.”

Another lauded Junaid’s work in the film and said, “Was very excited about #Maharaj after all the reviews, but the movie exceeded expectations by a margin! It has an intense plot, some great performances, spectacular visuals and soulful music, it also gives you a lot to think about. A powerful debut by #JunaidKhan!”

However, many criticized Maharaj. One user said, “Maharaj is DISAPPOINTING. Dragged to the core with episodic storytelling that fails to hold attention. These kind of films need extraordinary performances & drama but sadly, #JunaidKhan fails to leave a mark, like other actors. NOT RECOMMENDED.” The user added, “The film is flat with a predictable plot and the writing is extremely weak. It lacks the ability to hold your attention and this is because at regular intervals, you will notice the same recurring pattern, only the events change but the outcome, message & happenings remain similar.”

Helmed by Siddharth P Malhotra, Maharaj is currently streaming on Netflix. It is also trending on no. 1 on Top 10 movies list in India.
