Farrey is a 2023 Indian Hindi-language heist thriller directed by Soumendra Padhi. The film stars Salman Khan’s niece, Alizeh Agnihotri, in the lead role alongside a talented ensemble cast. The cast includes Ronit Roy, Sahil Mehta, Zeyn Shaw, Prasanna Bisht, Juhi Babbar, and Shilpa Shukla. Farrey is an official remake of the acclaimed 2017 Thai film Bad Genius.
Farrey is about Niyati, a brilliant state topper whose poor financial circumstances lead her down an immoral path. In a desperate bid to receive money, she begins helping her rich classmates in their exams by cheating. However, what starts as a simple lie soon spirals into a dangerous habit, pushing Niyati into a web of deceit.
Why was Shailesh worried about Niyati?
Farrey revolves around Niyati, a teenager from Ishrat Kada Girls Orphanage. She achieves the highest marks in the 10th board exams nationwide. Shailesh and Zoya, the caretakers of the orphanage, consider Niyati to be their own daughter, with Shailesh always ensuring her happiness.
Based on her result, Winston International, one of India’s premier schools, offers admission to Niyati and another top achiever, Akash. However, Shailesh worries about the stark differences between their world and Winston’s affluent environment.
Shailesh’s concerns are validated when Niyati becomes friends with the wealthy students at Winston. She forms a close bond with Chavi, the daughter of an industrialist, after helping her in passing exams. However, Niyati’s new social circle takes a troubling turn as they form a group focused on cheating in exams.
Despite being raised with all the care and love Shailesh and Zoya can provide, Niyati yearns for more. When Chavi invites her over, Niyati is awestruck by the grandeur of her house. Chavi bribes Niyati with an iPhone and asks her to help her pass exams. Chavi’s billionaire father beams with pride upon seeing her first-term report card.
What did Chavi ask from Niyati?
Soon, Niyati is approached by Chavi and her wealthy friends to help them in cheating in exchange for financial rewards. Niyati accepts the offer but instead of spending the money on herself, she proceeds to donate it to her orphanage. Niyati devises various signals to relay answer options, thus initiating a widespread cheating operation.
In the final term of their academic year, the teachers implement varying sets of question papers tailored to individual students. When Chavi and Prateek become desperate for answers, Niyati intervenes by exchanging question papers to assist them. However, Akash becomes aware of Prateek peeking at Niyati’s answers and reports the incident to the principal.
The principal had shown kindness towards Niyati since granting her admission. She had previously offered Niyati and Akash an opportunity to take a test that could secure them full scholarships at Oxford University. Upon catching Niyati red-handed, the principal imposes a penalty, thereby depriving her of the chance to sit for the test. Curiously, the other students involved face no repercussions, leading Niyati to distance herself from the group.
Meanwhile, Akash finds himself in a dire situation after being severely assaulted by unknown assailants, causing him to miss the crucial test.
Chavi and Prateek extend a helping hand to Niyati, only to exploit her for their own gain. The STIC, an international university admissions test, becomes the stage for their manipulation, as they offer Niyati a substantial sum of money to aid 20 students. Niyati’s financial need outweighs any ethical considerations, as she accepts the offer.
Why did Akash agree to help Niyati?
Given that the exams are administered at various centers for different students, the group collaborates to devise a strategy for success. Niyati cleverly plans for the test papers to remain consistent across locations and for Sydney’s time zone to be advantageous. Recognizing the severity of the task, Niyati enlists Akash to join the scheme. Despite his prior reluctance, Akash’s own circumstances prompt him to consider the financial gains for himself and his family.
To clandestinely transmit answers to the examination center, Niyati proposes a method involving printing pencil barcodes representing four distinct options. The group even rehearses their defence speeches in case of apprehension, during which Prateek inadvertently reveals Akash’s whereabouts on the day of his scholarship test. Enraged, Akash storms out of the premises but, driven by his financial plight, ultimately opts to journey to Sydney.
During the exam, Akash and Niyati clearly relayed answers back to India after each set, utilizing hidden phones stashed within the toilet tank. Their operation proceeded smoothly until Akash’s greed got the best of him before the third set. He demanded extra payment, leading to wasted time and arousing suspicion among the campus police officers. Caught red-handed with the phone, Akash faced physical violence by the officials to extract a confession.
Under scrutiny, Niyati also fell under suspicion and endured a humiliating strip search, though she had managed to conceal her phone earlier. Despite the ordeal, she persevered and completed the test. Upon informing Chavi of Akash’s apprehension, she faced a callous ultimatum from Chavi, who threatened to abandon her unless she finished the test. Returning to India without Akash, Niyati was met with warmth from Shailesh, who reassured her of another chance to sit for the scholarship test.
Farrey ending: Does Niyati make it to Harvard?
Consumed by guilt, Niyati severed ties with Chavi and Prateek, understanding their lack of concern for Akash’s predicament. Recognizing how easily they exploited her, she asked Chavi to seek another compliant accomplice at Stanford.
Despite her tribulations, Niyati persevered and successfully cleared the scholarship test and made her way to Harvard. She earned the admiration of her wise principal, who emphasized the value of earned success over deceitful shortcuts.
Days before departing for Oxford, Akash resurfaced, offering Niyati further opportunities in their illicit endeavours. Transformed by greed, he attempted to blackmail Niyati back into the racket. Having endured enough, Niyati denied his advances, refusing to be involved again. Upon her departure, she confessed her transgressions to Shailesh, who still accepted her.
Departing for Oxford with renewed resolve, Niyati embraced the chance for redemption, recognizing that despite teenage mistakes and missteps, the path to righteousness is always open.
