Mamitha Baiju’s latest political drama, Rebel (2024), made its silver screen debut on March 22, 2024. Directed by debutant director Nikesh RS., the film features a stellar cast, including G.V. Prakash Kumar, Venkatesh V.P., Adithya Bhaskar, Karunas, and Premalu fame Mamitha Baiju in significant roles.
Rebel follows the story of Tamil students from Munnar who pursue their studies in Kerala. They only constitute one-fourth portion of the student population in a local college. Amidst Malayali, students used Tamil students for their political gains.
The film explores the criticism faced by Malayali students due to language division and how they retaliate for it. The trailer also showed a glimpse of a love story between a Tamil boy (G.V. Prakash) and a Malayalee girl (Mamitha Baiju).

While the trailer hints at Rebel being inspired by true events, fans are eager to discern whether it is based on a specific real-life incident or a series of incidents. In a recent interview, the director of Rebel emphasized the inspiration drawn from actual events, further fueling curiosity among audiences.
He said, “I had written a couple of stories, but I was not 100 percent satisfied. I am from Munnar, and when I saw the issues that people there are facing. I was able to get into this subject for Rebel. After hearing the stories of what my relatives went through, I was able to collect the details and make it into a film story.”
Furthermore, he clarified, “I have heard many stories of what they felt and experienced. Rebel is a story formed out of the collective experience, along with creative liberty for the cinematic experience.”
Considering Nikesh’s perspective, Rebel is not derived from a specific incident, but it is crafted from a series of incidents Tamil students faced in Munnar.
As the movie continues to play in theaters, audiences await to see how much Nikesh’s masterpiece will collect at the box office by the end of the first week.
