Superstar Rajinikanth was last seen in the action-comedy Jailer. The film was released on August 09, 2023, and became one of the biggest hits ever. As Jailer dominated the box office, Rajinikanth’s pay cheque for the film made headlines. The audience loved the movie and deemed it a complete package.
Jailer is helmed by Nelson Dilipkumar and produced by Sun Pictures. It follows the story of Muthuvel, who loves his family dearly. When an unfortunate incident changes his and his family’s lives, Muthuvel deals with a ruthless villain. However, a twist at the end of the story changes it completely.
Who is Muthuvel?
The film begins with a heist in a temple carried out by Varman, who smuggles idols of gods. Later, Rajinikanth is introduced as Muthuvel Pandian, a retired police officer who lives with his family. His son, ACP Arjun, is after Varman and his gang. After several failed attempts, Arjun finally gets close to exposing Varman’s whereabouts but goes missing and is also announced dead. Hearing about his son, Muthuvel goes after one of the gangster’s henchmen, Seenu.
When he kills Seenu, Varman goes after Muthuvel’s family by threatening to harm his grandson. As a result, a helpless Muthuvel goes to crack a deal with Varman. However, Varman refuses to keep Muthuvel’s family out of the fight. This is when the real battle begins.
Rajinikanth’s Muthuvel shows his true powers against Varman’s tactics and destroys his smuggling business. To do so, he seeks help from his acquaintances. Muthuvel borrows the sharpest shooters from Narasimha (played by Shiva Rajkumar) for a mission. With their help and a vast supply of arms, he successfully pulls off a heist and steals Varman’s idols.
On the other hand, Varman hires a few men from Kamdev (played by Jackie Shroff) to kill Muthuvel’s family. However, they ultimately fail as Muthuvel had already taken care of his family’s safety. When Kamdev learns who Varman is after, he warns him. The true identity of Muthuvel is finally unveiled as Kamdedv reveals he was a former ruthless jailer of Tihar prison. During his service, Muthuvel disciplined the criminals harshly and helped them reform and restart their lives.
Jailer ending: What happens to Muthuvel’s son Arjun?
Apart from action and drama, Jailer has a significant plot twist. As the movie inches closer to its climax, Muthuvel corners Varmam. However, the latter reveals that Arjun is alive, and Muthuvel agrees to retrieve a crown for Varman in exchange for his son’s life. During the smuggling, Muthuvel reveals his master plan. He fakes a blast and replaces the real crown with a fake one with the help of his smuggler friend Mathew (played by Mohanlal).
It does not take Varman long to realize that the crown is a replica. However, Muthuvel’s plan has already come into action. With the camera in the fake crown, he learns that his son, ACP Arjun, is a corrupt police officer ready to kill his father for a cut in Varman’s operations. An agitated Muthuvel attacks Varman and kills him. On the other hand, Mathew destroys the gangster’s smuggling operations.
When the antagonists are out of the way, Muthuvel is left with one last decision. He confronts his son and asks him to surrender. However, a greedy Arjun refuses to agree to his father and points a gun at him. As a result, Muthuvel shoots his son, showing his loyalty to his values.
Justice is served, and Muthuvel walks away.
