The Oscars 2024 generated a surge of anticipation and excitement. However, for the Priyanka Chopra-backed documentary “To Kill a Tiger,” the evening concluded without a victory.
In a tight race, the Indian-set Canadian film faced tough competition. It ultimately lost out on the Best Documentary Feature Film award to the Ukrainian film 20 Days in Mariupol.
Priyanka Chopra’s To Kill a Tiger doesn’t win at Oscars 2024
Directed by Delhi-born Canadian filmmaker Nisha Pahuja, To Kill a Tiger tells the harrowing saga of a Jharkhand family. Highlighting the journey of them seeking justice for their teenage daughter who was brutally raped. Despite the father’s relentless efforts to bring the culprits to justice, the film depicts the family facing the community pressuring them to withdraw the charges.
Priyanka Chopra had stepped in as an executive producer just days before the Oscars through her production house, Purple Pebble Pictures. In a recent interview, the producer emphasized her commitment to projects that tackle issues she feels passionate about, particularly sexual violence against women.
She stated, “I seek and attach myself to work that really pushes the conversations of issues that I feel close to or passionate about, and sexual violence against women definitely is one of them. In India, we say one-third of women in India have experienced sexual violence, and that statistic has to be higher because of underreporting.”
To Kill a Tiger competed in Oscars 2024 alongside formidable films from worldwide. It included Bobi Wine: The People’s President, The Eternal Memory, Four Daughters, and the winner 20 Days in Mariupol.
Despite the fierce competition, To Kill a Tiger is a significant addition to internationally acclaimed non-fiction films from India.
Overall, while the Oscar loss may be a temporary setback, the impact and resonance of To Kill a Tiger persist. The film is currently available to stream on Netflix.
