The new survival thriller follows the story of a group of young men from Kerala who visit the Guna Caves of Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu. During their visit, one of the friends, named Subhash, falls into the caves. After several failed attempts to save him, one of the friends ties himself to a rope and goes into the caves. The Manjummel Boys finally save their friend and prove their close bond. The film is based on the true incident that happened in 2006.
For the unversed, Guna Caves was initially known as the Devil’s Kitchen. However, it received a new nickname because Kamal Haasan’s hit film Guna was shot in the caves. Moreover, it has also become a tourist attraction in Kodaikanal.
Is Manjummel Boys a tribute to Guna?
The Kamal Haasan starrer’s name is also mentioned in Manjummel Boys. As they visit Kodaikanal, one of their friends suggests going to Guna Caves because it is the shooting location for Guna. On the other hand, as the title credits of the film roll, Ilaiyaraaja’s popular creation, Kanmai Anbodu from Guna, is played in the background. Allegedly, the visuals also have sketches of Haasan and Roshini. Therefore, it is evident that the movie was a tribute to Guna. The track is again heard in the background when Subhash is rescued from the caves.
Director Chidambaram and the entire cast of Manjummel Boys also met Kamal Haasan after the film’s release. Sharing a clip from their meeting, the director wrote, “Guna With The Boys.” For the unversed, Haasan played the titular role in Guna.
