Is Malaikottai Vaaliban Based on a True Story?

Mohanlal’s latest grand film, Malaikottai Vaaliban, is currently streaming on Disney Plus Hotstar. The film is split into two parts, with a sequel, Malaikottai Vaaliban 2, announced in the end credits. Fans are now eagerly awaiting the release of the second sequel after watching the first part on OTT. Amidst this, a question arises: Is Malaikottai Vaaliban based on a true story? So, let’s find out the answer.

Lijo Jose Pellissery directed the Malayalam drama featuring Mohanlal in dual roles as Malaikottai Vaaliban and Malaivettai Vaaliban. The movie also stars Sonalee Kulkarni, Hareesh Peradi, Danish Sait, Manoj Moses, Katha Nandi, and Manikandan R. Achari in prominent roles. The story follows a protagonist’s journey as a warrior who rules the land with his strength.

Who is Malaikottai Vaaliban in real life?

Malaikottai Vaaliban is set in the backdrop of the 1900s when British rule prevailed in India. Various sources suggest that Mohanlal is portraying the real-life wrestler Ghulam Mohammad Baksh, known as Rustam-e-Hind. He was also known by the ring name ‘The Great Gama’; he took Indian wrestling to the International level. Gulam Mohammad remained undisputed in his career for nearly 50 years.

Gulam Baksh was born in Kashmir on May 22, 1878, later known as wrestling champion Gama. After completing strength training in traditional Godha, he participated in the 1888 Strongman competition in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. This competition led to a turning point in Gama’s career. It is also said that during the India-Pakistan partition, Gama rescued lots of Hindus stuck in Lahore. Following his strength, he ruled Godha for 50 years.

On the other hand, as per the FilmCompanion website, Mohanlal closely portrays the role of the mighty warrior Karnan. Following the film’s multiple frames, Vaaliban is shown with the Sun behind him, his earrings, and his unbeatable streak during his time. These things highlight the similarities between Vaaliban’s character and Mahabharath’s tragic hero, Karnan. If the speculation comes true, seeing how makers will connect the film with Mahabharat’s character will be interesting.
