On its 19th anniversary, Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukerji’s highly acclaimed film Black made its OTT debut on Netflix.
The movie, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, also stars Ayesha Kapur, Shernaz Patel, and Dhritiman Chatterjee in supporting roles. Applause Entertainment and SLB Films produced the movie. Black narrates the story of Michelle, a deaf-and-blind woman, and her relationship with her teacher, Debraj, an elderly alcoholic teacher who later develops Alzheimer’s disease. It had its theatrical release on February 4, 2005.
The movie’s story was inspired by the activist Helen Keller’s life and her 1903 autobiography, The Story of My Life. Black boasts a total box office collection of $15.1 million, making it one of the eighth highest-grossing Bollywood films of 2005.

Black movie is now streaming on Netflix
On Sunday, February 4, 2024, Black marked its 19th anniversary since its initial release. To honor the milestone, Netflix announced the movie’s first-ever digital release. Amitabh Bachchan also took to his social media to share the exciting news.
The OTT platform made the announcement by sharing a heartbreaking clip from the movie on social media. They captioned it with, “It’s been 19 years since Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Black released, and today we’re celebrating its first ever digital release on Netflix! Debraj and Michelle’s journey has been an inspiration to all of us, and we hope it instills you with strength and compassion.”
Black has received acclaim for its compelling storyline, outstanding performances, meticulous direction, and poignant dialogues. Amitabh Bachchan’s portrayal in the movie even earned him the prestigious Best Actor National Award.
In a statement, Rani Mukerji expressed her excitement for the movie’s anniversary and its digital release. She said, “Black had a profound impact on my life as an actor and as an individual. The challenges of using sign language for even the simplest tasks was a huge learning experience and a very humbling one too. ‘Black’ will always remain very special to me, because it taught me a lot about life and about being grateful.”
The actress also added, “Black has remained one of the tent pole films for me, that will always be attached to my name forever. I’m most happy about the fact that finally it’s releasing on one of the best platforms and people who missed watching it will be able to see the magic of ‘Black’ now at the click of a button.”
