“Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s personality cannot be compared to present-day politicians”: Main Atal Hoon’s Pankaj Tripathi
The biopic Main Atal Hoon explores the multifaceted personality of Atal Bihar Vajpayee. Known as the “Man of Steel with a Heart of Gold,” Vajpayee’s role as a politician extended beyond a statesman and an influential leader. His poetry added another feather to his many hats.
As it is now, the recently released trailer divulged the same. The trailer kicks off with a nation in turmoil following Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination. It also showcases ideological conflicts, including Vajpayee’s unwavering stance against then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi during the Emergency period.
Main Atal Hoon trailer delves into poignant moments, such as Vajpayee’s interactions with former President APJ Abdul Kalam after the historic Pokhran nuclear test. Furthermore, the trailer showcased significant political events, including the Babri Masjid demolition, the Lahore Bus Yatra, and the Kargil War.
Pankaj Tripathi, portraying the iconic leader, shares his perspective on the late Atal Bihar Vajpayee’s personality. In a recent interview, he shared (originally in Hindi), “The personality of Atal Bihari Vajpayee is such that it cannot be compared to present-day politicians. He was a poet… He was a leader whose staunchest enemies were also his admirers.”
Furthermore, he added, “After preparing and reading about Atal ji’s characteristics, you would not feel the same way about modern-day leaders. Politicians, who were not just his opponents but even his staunchest critics, respected him and adhered to his legislative etiquette. It is tough to find an opponent for Atal in Indian politics. I was wondering if I could do justice to this. But I have attended two of Atal ji’s political rallies. I went to listen to him, standing in the crowd five hundred meters away.”
On the whole, Pankaj Tripathi’s Main Atal Hoon is gearing up to be more than just a cinematic experience. The film is releasing on January 19, 2024.
