Shah Rukh Khan recently starred in his third film of 2023, Dunki. The movie marked his first collaboration with celebrated filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani. Even though the actor’s previous movies, Pathaan and Jawan, worked tremendously well, Dunki’s performance is a tad bit slow at the box office. However, the director recently revealed that SRK was aware of how Dunki would perform at the box office.
Dunki was among the most anticipated movies of 2023. Vicky Kaushal, Taapsee Pannu, and Boman Irani also starred in the action comedy. However, it faced massive competition from Prabhas and Prashanth Neel’s Salaar at the box office. The film opened with fairly good numbers and set the record of the biggest opening for a non-action film in the post-pandemic era.
Rajkumar Hirani compares Dunki to Jawan
During a recent conversation with DNA India.com, Rajkumar Hirani revealed Shah Rukh Khan knew Dunki would not open like Jawan. He revealed that SRK kept telling him to be realistic and not compare Dunki’s opening to that of Jawan. Hirani said, “Throughout the journey, he kept telling me that don’t expect this to open like Jawan. It will not. He said I have done these films before so we should be realistic. There will be a different audience for this kind of a film, which is exactly how it happened.”
The filmmaker further praised Shah Rukh Khan for being brave enough to be able to speculate on the film’s success. Rajkumar Hirani added, “Then it becomes more of a social media conversation where people say ‘it should have been like this.’ But I feel you should be fearless about and believe in the stories you want to tell.”
Rajkumar Hirani further added that movies like Dunki should be judged in the long run. The movie has allegedly earned a whopping $48 million at the worldwide box office so far.
