Shah Rukh Khan is set to make another blockbuster entry at the box office with the much-anticipated release of Rajkumar Hirani’s Dunki. It is scheduled to hit theatres on December 21, 2023, just in time for the Christmas weekend to add the fireworks to the celebrations. With this, the ‘Badshah’ of Bollywood will be gracing the silver screen for the third time in 2023.

Shah Rukh Khan’s upcoming movie is slated to release in the third week of December. The makers of the film strategically decided on this date as the following weekend is filled with festivities. Adding to the excitement, Dunki’s release date is clashing with Prabhas’ Salaar. The latter is set to release one day after, i.e. December 22, 2023. All in all, fans are anticipating a mega box office clash between the Indian cinema titans.
Dunki’s plot
It is set against the backdrop of a quaint village called Laltu. The film follows the journey of Hardy (Shah Rukh Khan) along with his friends Sukhi (Vicky Kaushal), Mannu (Taapsee Pannu), and more. All of them have one dream, and that is to find better opportunities abroad. So, in their quest for a smooth immigration, they start taking English coaching classes. However, despite their efforts, they did not pass the immigration process.
Nonetheless, sticking to the dream, they all decide to go through the illegal way, aka donkey flight. It is an unconventional method of entering foreign nations like Canada, the USA, and the UK. Do they make it or not? The question will be answered only after release.
Furthermore, Shah Rukh Khan recently shared more details about Dunki’s plot in a promotional event in Dubai. He said, “I know that a lot of you people have left your homes and have made Dubai your second home. From India, Bangladesh, the rest of the subcontinent, so many of you are here from Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Now you all are far from home, but you have acquired a new home. Still, you have a deep love for your home and have this longing to go back.”

Is Dunki based on a true story?
Yes, Dunki is based on true stories. Recently, the makers shared a promotional video in which the director shared his inspiration behind making the upcoming movie. He shared (originally in Hindi), “Actually, this is a house in Jalandhar, near Jalandhar. In the house you are seeing, on top of it, there is such a big airplane made of cement. It’s not just one house; there are many houses where airplanes are placed on the roofs. So I was quite amazed by it. I wanted to know why is it like this.”
He further added (originally in Hindi), “That’s a cultural practice where, in homes whose members have someone going abroad, be it to London, Canada, America, or any other place, they place an airplane on the roof of their house.”
All in all, the curiosity to know more about this phenomenon led to the creation of Dunki. Even the name is an ode to the place. In Punjab, people pronounce Donkey as Dunki, aka the Donkey flight.
