The 29th Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF) has unfurled its cinematic tapestry, starting from December 5, 2023. Throughout December 6 to 12, cinephiles are in for a cinematic feast with films screening across 23 venues in Kolkata. This included an array of both government and privately-run single-screen theaters and multiplexes.
One distinctive feature of KIFF 2023 is its viewer-friendly approach. There’s no need for advance booking. Instead, free daily passes are distributed at the venues. The screenings are happening across 13 private single screens and four multiplex screens, including PVR Inox. What’s more? All screenings are set to commence at 10 a.m.

The latest edition of KIFF will be screening two critically acclaimed films – Shaunak Sen’s All That Breathes and Anurag Kashyap’s Kennedy. All That Breathes is a 2022 Indian documentary that has won several accolades at various prestigious events, such as the Sundance Film Festival, Cannes Film Festival, Hong Kong International Film Festival, and a Grand Jury Prize. The film is screening on December 7, 2023, at Radha Studios at 1:30 p.m.
Kennedy, Anurag Kashyap’s police noir, garnered phenomenal success at the Cannes Film Festival. After all, it received a standing ovation of seven minutes after its screening. It will be screening on December 10, 2023, at Nandan-I at 7 p.m.
Additionally, in the International Competition: Innovation in Moving Images section Anjan Dutt’s Bengali production, Chalchitra Ekhon, takes the spotlight. The film celebrates the birth centenary of mentor Mrinal Sen. Dutt pays homage to Sen, who played an important role in shaping his early career. It will be screened on December 10, 2023, at Nandan-I at 2 p.m.
Lubdhak Chatterjee’s Whispers of Fire and Water will also be screened at the KIFF 2023. This film takes viewers on an exploration of an audio installation artist visiting a major mining zone in eastern India. All in all, it is a tale of self-discovery.
The screening list also includes Haobam Paban Kumar’s Joseph’s Son which documents a poignant journey of a father searching for his son in a conflict-afflicted state. Cinephiles can also watch Manoj Shinde’s Valli which follows a man who abandons the Jogta custom, embodying femininity, and escapes to the city. Furthermore, Sreemoyee Singh’s And, Towards Happy Alleys is vying for the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema’s top award. The six-year project is inspired by Iranian filmmaker’s struggles.
On top of that, Broken Dreams: Stories From The Myanmar Coup is an anthology film by Ninefold Mosaic to be screened at KIFF. The film unfolds stories of ordinary Myanmarese citizens caught in a military-governed country.
Additionally, Bindu Nair’s Forged in Fire stands out in the Indian Documentary section. The film documents the lives of individuals fighting or surviving cancer, along with their families.
All in all, KIFF 2023 is set to feature some internationally critically acclaimed films, including Anatomy Of A Fall and Fallen Leaves. The former’s screening is on December 7, 2023. While the latter is screening on December 6, 2023.
