Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, Thalapathy Vijay’s Leo premiered this month, having a monstrous opening at the box office on its first day. According to reports, the film has reportedly earned over USD 12 million worldwide.
The Tamil-language action thriller film is produced by S. S. Lalit Kumar and Jagadish Palanisamy. The film stars Thalapathy Vijay alongside Trisha, Sanjay Dutt, Arjun, Madonna Sebastian, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Mysskin, Mansoor Ali Khan, George Maryan, Priya Anand, and Mathew Thomas.

Thalapathy Vijay’s Leo continues to shatter records at the international box office
Leo revolves around a café owner who becomes a local hero through an act of violence. However, his action set off repercussions with connections to an old life he left behind, shaking his new life to its very core. The film is the third instalment in the Lokesh Cinematic Universe, following the events of Kaithi (2019) and Vikram (2022). It draws inspiration from A History of Violence (2005).
The film broke the opening day record in several overseas markets. These earnings not only made Leo the biggest opening ever for a Kollywood film but also became the second film after Baahubali 2 among all Indian films to receive such a positive response. The upcoming weekend for Leo is expected to generate USD 20 million, marking yet another milestone for Kollywood.
Only seven other Indian films have managed to reach USD 12 million globally on their first day. It has surpassed the day one worldwide collection of Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan. The Atlee-directed film had grossed USD 15 million on the first day of its release. The film has reportedly become the biggest opening in Tamil Nadu in 2023. It also had the highest collection in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and Kerala.
Theatrically released on October 19, 2023, Leo premiered in standard, IMAX, and other premium formats. The film saw releases in dubbed versions in the Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi languages. Internationally premiering on October 18, 2023, it became the first Tamil film to release in over 999 locations in North America.
