Rather recently, writer Carl Ellsworth (The Last House on the Left, Goosebumps) was hired to tackle a new Gremlins, with words jumbled between remake/reboot/reimagining and however we presently attempt to call new versions of old favorites. Now producer Chris Columbus (who penned the original Joe Dante-directed Christmas classic) has thrown another re into the mix: Reinvention.
Columbus spoke to SlashFilm at this past weekends CinemaCon, Indicating a new Gremlins would land somewhere on the reboot scale, possibly bringing back old cast. He explains, Initially I remember back in 84-85 when they approached me and said, do you wanna write the sequel and I said, this is before the obsession with franchises. So my feeling was no. Weve told the story, that was that 1980s thinking. And then suddenly all these years later, we were approached with an idea that really sounded like an interesting version. Its not a remake of the movie at all. Its a– its just a reinvention of it.
Columbus goes on to discuss the recent warm reception of the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer and its incorporation of classic characters, saying So for me, I would wanna get involved if we could create some sort of emotional connection even though its a new story.
