Director Marko Mäkilaakso is currently developing It Came From the Desert, a giant ant film inspired by a giant ant video game inspired by giant ant films!
The Finnish filmmaker known for War of the Dead is teaming with Roger! Pictures and video game developer and publisher Cinemaware on the adaptation. The film, which Twitch revealed art and an early development teaser for, is based on the 1989 game of the same name in which meteor radiation has mutated ants to a gargantuan scale. The game itself was set in 1951 and clearly in the tradition of Atomic sci-fi pictures like the celebrated Them!
It Came From the Desert won’t be a period piece, as evidenced by the motocross-filled trailer and this synopsis: “The action-horror-comedy tells a story of a giant mutated ants which wreak havoc in New Mexico desert. The film will also follow on the legacy of the game and tie into the original story as new characters make an appearance several decades later to discover new horrors.”
