Id like to bridge a gap.
Its seemed, for quite a while, major horror writing online is often dictated by the speculative, and that the ties and roots in zines and zine culture have been frayed. When Ryan Turek, Shocks fearless leader for years, phoned to ask if Id be interested in taking over, I wondered, How do we fix that? How do we match the fun and necessity of day-to-day and week-to-weekthe news, reviews and announcementswith a larger cohesion? Im still not sure, but were sure as hell going to try.
My name is Samuel Zimmerman, and Im honored to have been given this privilege. Just days ago, I vacated a longtime position at horror legacy FANGORIA and some of my parting words spoke to the continued relevance, breadth and forward motion of this genre here; three qualities were going to try and live by.
I want you, as a reader, to feel something larger going on. I want Shock to be a feature-driven destination, which will earnestly, humorously and excellently take stock of horrors past, present and future. I want the day-to-day to be met with thematic and thorough pieces tied to every avenue of horror; new films, old favorites, total obscurities, and the filmmakers and filmmaking behind them. I want you to feel like even the smallest possible piece of news is newsworthy.
I want what youre reading to matter. I want each month to feel like an issue, a sentiment which will hopefully become clearer in the months ahead.
I hope youll come hang out, and more than that, I hope youll stay. Theres a lot to come!
