Netflix Horrors: The Films Heading to Instant in October!

“Netflix Horrors” is a regular column in which Shock Till You Drop alerts you to the latest genre titles to hit the VOD service. Usually, we bring your attention to films that have just been released on Netflix Instant, however, for this installment, we’re going to look ahead at what’s coming throughout October. We’re getting ahead of the curve a little bit that way you’re in the loop! Stay tuned for more updates throughout the month as I’m sure other titles will be included in the October programming.

October 1st

Shadow of the Vampire (2000): John Malkovich, Willem Dafoe, Udo Kier, Cary Elwes, Catherine McCormack, Eddie Izzard. A wicked movie about the making of the 1922 silent-film classic Nosferatu, Shadow of the Vampire features Willem Dafoe’s Oscar-nominated performance. Director F.W. Murnau (John Malkovich) yearns to create the most terrifying vampire tale imaginable. Unknown actor Max Schreck (Dafoe), cast as the vampire Count Orlock, makes an impressive debut as filming begins, even as he hides an unearthly secret.

Shivers (1975): Paul Hampton, Joe Silver, Lynn Lowry, Allan Kolman, Susan Petrie, Barbara Steele, Ronald Mlodzik. Director David Cronenberg’s film debut revels in his pet theme: deep-rooted fears of our bodies and sexuality. A scientist’s neighbors fall to primal urges after he unleashes a sexually transmitted parasite that destroys inhibitions in its host body. This terrifying thriller tests nerves with its bloodthirsty, wormlike parasites — in one gruesome and memorable sequence, they attack a woman in a bathtub.

The Phantom of the Opera (1989): Robert Englund, Jill Schoelen, Bill Nighy, Alex Hyde-White, Stephanie Lawrence, Terence Harvey. An emotionally and physically scarred man known as the Phantom — once an enormously talented composer — haunts a contemporary opera house in search of a maiden he can groom to be a diva.

October 2nd

?Carrie (2013): Chloë Grace Moretz, Julianne Moore, Judy Greer, Gabriella Wilde, Michelle Nolden, Alex Russell. In this remake of the high school horror flick based on Stephen King’s novel, misfit teenager Carrie gets back at the classmates who’ve bullied her by unleashing her newfound supernatural powers and creating havoc at the prom.

October 7th

Supernatural: Season 9: Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles. Raised by their dad to fight supernatural forces, grown siblings Dean and Sam crisscross the country in their 1967 Chevy Impala, investigating paranormal activity and picking fights with deadly demons, ghosts and monsters.

The Following: Season 2: Kevin Bacon, James Purefoy, Natalie Zea, Shawn Ashmore, Annie Parisse, Valorie CurrWhen escaped serial killer Joe Carroll goes on a new killing spree, reclusive former FBI agent Ryan Hardy is called in, having captured Carroll nine years ago. Hardy soon discovers that Carroll has a loyal following of killers ready to terrorize.

October 14th

Witching & Bitching (2013): Javier Botet, Mario Casas, Santiago Segura, Hugo Silva, Carolina Bang, Carmen Maura. In this heist film turned horror fest, director Álex de la Iglesia’s love of mayhem is on full display as a gang of gold thieves lands in a coven of witches who are preparing for an ancient ritual — and in need of a sacrifice.
