Alien, of course, wasn’t the only film Giger was involved in. He was also brought aboard Alejandro Jodorowsky’s design team for Dune, a project that never came to fruition but is the subject of Jodorowsky’s Dune, a documentary released this year. Giger also contributed to Poltergeist II, Species, and other film projects.
For me, Giger’s art was instrumental in my budding fascination with horror at a young age. Books that collected his weird, grotesque, hyper-sexualized “biomechanical” artistry – like “H.R. Giger’s Necronomicon,” “Necronomicon II,” “Giger’s Alien” and “Species Design” – fueled the imagination and creeped me out at the same time.
He will most certainly be missed…
