We all know that Resident Evil has become just Modern Warfare with creatures. I often compare games to film because the same mentality applies. When a title or more importantly, a series of titles do well, there is a rush to turn everything into a mirror image of that title. Napper knows this as we all do. The difference is that no one expected to hear it out loud.
Speaking with EDGE, Creative director Alistair Hope stated: “I think this team really got a lot out of Dead Space 1 and Resident Evil.” Cool. But then Napper said this: “…those franchises moved in a direction that isn’t… Well, I think that fans of those originals have been marginalized and sometimes it feels like these days they’re just a couple of degrees away from being Gears Of War. Cinematic set-pieces and loads of guns isn’t quite the ‘hiding in the cupboard’ experience I got in the old days of horror gaming. But that stuff has been embraced by the indie community who are producing these high fidelity games that are tense and atmospheric. It’s not often you get to do that in the triple-A space.”
With that, games have folded their arms and cocked their eyebrows.
The Alien: Isolation team is confident so it seems that the community as a whole is worried. The kicker is that nothing he said is unwarranted; they have just unfortunately been saddled with the baggage of an incredibly bad and dishonest previous release. I personally am glad to see that they are unafraid to make a comparison. Resident Evil needs a kick in the butt when it comes to creating horror again.
I know people are guarded with this game, but how do you feel about the last two Resident Evil releases? Is he Napper right or do you feel the games balance horror and action well enough?
