The best in horror, sci-fi, fantasy and badass cinema comes to Los Angeles in the inaugural Beyond Fest. A partnership of the American Cinematheque and creative collective Amity, Beyond Fest offers an eclectic mix of premieres, rare repertory screenings and special events programmed by genre fans for genre fans. With films drawn from all over the world, Beyond Fest brings many firsts to Southern California.
Legendary progressive rockers Goblin play their first-ever Los Angeles shows on three consecutive nights before rare 35mm screenings of Dario Argento films scored by the band. Seminal London label Death Waltz Recording Co. celebrates its latest release, the new soundtrack to ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13, with a screening of the John Carpenter classic, followed by a live performance by legendary composer Alan Howarth. Enjoy a live-scoring of 1982 slasher fave PIECES by recording artist Umberto. Renown artist, writer and director Clive Barker makes an incredibly rare appearance to screen and discuss the holy grail of lost fantasy epics, NIGHTBREED: THE CABAL CUT.
Notorious German director Jörg Buttgereit joins us with his unique shockers NEKROMANTIK and SCHRAMM: INTO THE MIND OF A SERIAL KILLER. Japanese auteur Sion Sono slashes crimson across the screen in his latest masterpiece, the outrageous WHY DON’T YOU PLAY IN HELL? A pair of ’60s horror classics from director Kaneto Shindô, ONIBABA and KURONEKO screen, plus, two of the most striking films of the year, both from the U.K.: Ben Wheatley’s acid trip, A FIELD IN ENGLAND, and the sonic-scream fest THE BORDERLANDS.
Sneak previews include the sci fi thriller THE LAST DAYS ON MARS, starring Liev Schreiber, and the alien abduction shocker ALMOST HUMAN, fresh from Fantastic Fest. The new DISCOPATH and 1980 favorite PROM NIGHT display the deadly power of dance music. Plus more surprises to be announced!
Director Richard Donner joins us for a very rare screening of his terrifying ode to Satan’s spawn, THE OMEN. The popular podcast/stage show “The Thrilling Adventure Hour” presents a live radio broadcast followed by a screening of THE MUMMY. Joe Dante, the Nerdist Writers Panel and the Trailers From Hell team present a hair-raising double feature of THE HOWLING and Universal’s original THE WOLF MAN. The greatest horror film of the silent era gets the treatment it deserves in a new DCP of F.W. Murnau’s vampiric classic, NOSFERATU. And the 8th annual Dusk-to-Dawn Horrorthon will bring you lethal cars, sentient spiders, neighbors from Hell and enough free coffee to keep your eyes open until morning – when they’re not clamped shut with terror!
