Out promoting his latest series, The Following, Kevin Williamson talked to Entertainment Tonight about a scrapped idea for Scream 3. I have to do a bit of self promotion to set the story up, but in the documentary Still Screaming (the Scream trilogy retrospective I did a bit ago), the cast and crew reveal the various openings Scream 3 tinkered with – a sequel which even considered sticking with a story that took place in Woodsboro.
Inside, Williamson (who declined to be in the documentary, I should note) elaborates on that Woodsboro idea.
He told Entertainment Tonight:
In my original story for Scream 3, the killers were basically a fanclub of Woodsboro kids that had formed because of Stab 1 and Stab 2. They were all doing the killings and the big surprise of the movie was when Sidney walked into the house after Ghostface had killed everyone and they all rose up. None of them were actually dead and theyd planned the whole thing The motive was their quest for fame, they were trying to top [Sidney’s] Woodsboro story so they could be the legacy of their hometown.
So, basically, Scream 3 was going to adopt April Fool’s Day‘s “no one is really dead” gag. I’m sure that would have pissed audiences off (as April Fool’s Day did). Naturally, Williamson carried the fame-seeking theme into Scream 4.
