No Emmerich in sight

Three films gave rise to a violent reaction in me over the last 30 years. One of them being Roland Emmerich’s abortion of a film Godzilla. What nonsense. A G-Fan since birth, I thought Emmerich’s vision was a kick to the balls.
Legendary Pictures is going to take another crack at the property. Bloody-Disgusting broke some time ago that they were flirting with snatching up the rights to the giant lizard. That flirtation is now a full-on love affair.
Legendary officially announced today it is going to co-produce/finance a new picture with Warner Bros. with the aim to unleash Godzilla in 2012. Toho is, of course, involved and will be handling the Japanese release.
“Godzilla is one of the world’s most powerful pop culture icons, and we at Legendary are thrilled to be able to create a modern epic based on this long-loved Toho franchise,” said Thomas Tull, Chairman and CEO of Legendary, in a press release. “Our plans are to produce the Godzilla that we, as fans, would want to see. We intend to do justice to those essential elements that have allowed this character to remain as pop-culturally relevant for as long as it has.”
Dan Lin, Roy Lee and Brian Rogers are producing. Yoshimitsu Banno, Kenji Okuhira and Doug Davison will executive produce.
So, is Godzilla still relevant? You bet. The big green fella still represents a lot – from the horrors of a war-torn world to Mother Nature’s wrath. And since we haven’t had a decent Godzilla film from Japan in quite some time, I curious to see where this all goes!
