Writer also talks Marvel’s Deathlok

At last night’s Los Angeles premiere for The Wolfman, Shock got the chance to chat with screenwriter David Self about several projects he’s been recently attached to. First one on our list? The long rumored Robocop reboot with Darren Aronofsky at the helm.
“Iâm still involved with it and Darren Aronofskyâs still involved with it,” says Self. “Heâs making another movie right now (Black Swan), but weâre waiting for MGM, to sort things out since theyâre a large corporation and itâs a situation where we have to be practical. We’re waiting to continue with them, we hope that that happens soon and we can get back to it soon.”
When asked if they were approaching the new Robocop as an unofficial sequel or a remake, Self explained, “Itâs definitely not a sequel. Itâs an origin story, itâs an origin to the original Robocop. So, itâs basically a ‘reboot’.”
Another script of the screenwriter that has made the rounds over the last few years is Deathlok, a half man/half cyborg superhero very much in the vein of Robocop based on the Marvel comic book.
The writer smirks when I ask about it. “I donât know whatâs going with that movie honestly. I havenât talked to the producers recently about that. I did a rewrite on it several years ago and it shows up on IMDB all the time. Itâs been a long while since I worked on it, but I would love to see that. I love that story and I love that character.”
