Another Braveheart-style Dracula

Producer talks Year Zero

So make that two, yes, two Dracula-inspired origin tales that liken themselves as epic Braveheart-style stories.

Producer Mike De Luca has had Dracula: Year Zero set up at Universal for some time. And recently, Summit Entertainment announced it was going to produce Vlad (more on that here). Both claim to be on the scale of Braveheart, but one will delve into the supernatural, the other will not.

Here’s De Luca talking about the story of Year Zero in a recent interview with Collider: “…in a moment of desperation [Vlad] looks at this mountain top in Transylvania that all the gypsies in his country say is haunted and full of bad black magic. And he’s never believed in any of that supernatural kind of what he thinks is hogwash. But in a moment of desperation he ascends that mountain to see if there’s any truth to any kind of power that he could use to keep the invading army out. And he finds something that gets him to where we have come to know him as Dracula and uses that power source to kind of fight the Turks after he’s changed.

As you see, Year Zero will at least ease its viewer, in its own special way, into the Dracula mythology we know. Summit’s Vlad, however, will not have any vampirism at all. Still, this whole dueling Dracula tales is reminiscent of Dante’s Peak versus Volcano and Deep Impact versus Armageddon.
