Paranormal Activity Goes Global

Foreign territories plan remake and sequels

While Paranormal Activity is currently enjoying the top spot as the number one movie in America, foreign distributors are ready to roll out the movie and see how it does in the rest of the world.

According to Variety, Paranormal Activity will begin showing in the U.K. on Halloween night starting with midnight screenings to help build buzz, much like Paramount did during the first October frame here in the States. Distributor Icon plans to to go wide with the film in Blighty in mid-November.

Warners will open it the following weekend in Russia; next, Svensk takes the pic into Scandinavia on Nov. 13, Wild Bunch into Germany on Nov. 19. Paranormal Activity hits Spain (On Pictures), South Korea (Korea Screen) and Latin America (Playarte) on Nov. 27, while the movie bows in Australia (Icon), France (Wild Bunch) and Italy (Filmauro) in the first December frame. Japan will be the last major market to open, with Presidio launching the pic in April 2010.

According to the article, Russia, Spain and several Asian territories have already licensed or are licensing local-language remake and sequel rights since interest is high for local-language remakes.

Here in the US, Paramount’s got the worldwide rights to an English-language sequel, which they’re inevitably already planning.
