His thoughts on being the new Freddy Krueger
We bumped into actor Jackie Earle Haley at last night’s 2009 Scream Awards and before bringing up anything Nightmare related, this writer couldn’t help but tell him how much I loved him in Maniac Cop 3. “Oh geez,” he laughs, slightly caught off guard. “Thatâs awesome!”
Ever since the debut of the trailer for Platinum Dunes reboot of A Nightmare On Elm Street, reaction has been fairly positive to Haley’s portrayal of the new Freddy Krueger. We asked for his thoughts on the fan reaction thus far. “I think it’s awesome and it feels great,” he says. “I think the trailer looks really good. I know thereâs a lot of people out there that wished it was Robert (Englund) and I get that, I completely understand that. He really made the character incredibly iconic. Heâs iconic as well, so for me, itâs just such a real honor to get to step in and have a go at that character. I think itâs looking pretty good.”
“I look at Freddy as a mystical boogeyman,” he continues. “The guy you hear the camp fire story about that we love to hate. As fans, those stories make us giggle. Itâs wonderful to do something with this kind of hyper reality in the genre. People like to enter that in a Nightmare film, to be entertained, but I donât think anybody would want to be there in real life!”
