Thoughts on latest season, Lithgow & the Dexter novels
We caught up with Julie Benz at last night’s 2009 Scream Awards and talked a bit about her character Rita, the now-wife to serial killer Dexter Morgan on the Showtime hit series. Having lived with the character now for four seasons, we asked her what the biggest challenge was for this new season.
“Well, we have the baby this year and at first I was a little fearful of working with babies,” she confesses. “Because you never know what youâre going to get or how theyâre going to act, but then I actually found it really freeing and inspiring because they keep you on your toes. Itâs actually been a great experience so far this season.”
Considering the character also co-exists in four novels by author Jeff Lindsay, we inquired if she’s kept up at all with her book counterpart at all. “Iâve honestly only read the first two books,” she admits. “I havenât read past the second book. I do love them and I think Jeff Lindsay is a great writer.”
Everyone’s been excited by the addition of John Lithgow this season. Knowing this might delve into spoiler territory, we still had to ask if she’s had the chance to work with the esteemed actor yet. “I havenât had a chance to work with John Lithgow,” she says. “But heâs just so brilliant. I get to sit next to him at table readings, because I make him! I grab him and say âMister Lithgow, you are sitting next to me at this table reading!â
On a side-note, while she may be married to a serial killer vigilante on Dexter, she’ll also be appearing opposite two very different vigilantes later this month in The Boondock Saints 2: All Saint’s Day, the long awaited sequel to the cult classic flick. We asked if she’s had a chance to see the new movie yet.
“I have! I think itâs really awesome. The visuals that Troy Duffy created are absolutely amazing. The story is fun. The brothers are back and theyâre better then ever. I think it definitely holds up to the first movie. I think we see eight years later a more evolved director in Troy and itâs a perfect sequel.”
