Universal Taps into Videodrome Remake

Long live the new flesh?

Universal Pictures has big plans for David Cronenberg’s Videodrome. Remake plans. Plans to take the idea introduced in ’83 and modernize it, “infuse it with the possibilities of nano-technology and blow it up into a large-scale sci-fi action thriller.”

So says Variety who broke the scoop that Ehren Kruger (The Ring) is penning a redo with the intention to produce it with Daniel Bobker. The original starred James Woods as Max Renn, a station manager introduced to a pirate broadcast called Videodrome, a program laden with torture. He subsequently sets out to find Videodrome’s source. Oh, and he grows a vagina-like womb in his belly and makes out with Deborah Harry’s lips on a throbbing television set and more…

Written and director by Cronenberg during the VHS years, Ehren Kruger has much inspiration to draw on in our tech-heavy world. But seriously…a remake? Universal picked up the rights to do the film from Canada’s Rene Malo. He’ll serve as executive producer.
