A Waters-esque slasher film and a werewolf project
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles‘ Thomas Dekker was at Dark Delicacies in Burbank last night signing DVD copies of After Dark Films’ Horrorfest entry From Within, a thriller he starred in for director Phedon Papamichael. ShockTillYouDrop.com cornered the actor to find out more about two upcoming films.
Dekker tells us he’s getting ready to head back to San Francisco for All About Evil (first photos) where Joshua Grannell is directing a cast that includes Natasha Lyonne, Noah Segan, Jack Donner and Julie-Caitlin Brown. Dekker plays “a kid named Steven. He’s the guy who has to be normal, because everyone else is so crazy. He’s a horror-obsessed geek which was something easy for me to identify with.”
Evil tells of a mousy librarian who has inherited a failing old movie house; she taps into her inner serial killer to generate some business. Her short films draw the attention of the local horror fans, but they don’t realize the murders they’re watching on screen are very real.
In addition to the aforementioned cast, Cassandra Peterson, aka Elvira, also co-stars as Dekker’s mother. “She was fantastic because I used to grow up with my dad watching Elvira all of the time,” Dekker said. “I had never actually seen her as herself. There are a lot of in jokes with her. Then I got to meet Mink [Stole] which is awesome. Natasha and I have gotten really close. I’m really excited about it, it’s going to be a really cool movie. I’ve seen some footage edited together and the tone is impossible to describe, which makes it totally unique. It’s as if John Waters directed a gory horror film. It’s a total cult movie, very camp, but it’s not a spoof. It does have horrific moments, but there’s always this vein of comedy going throughout it.”
Later this year, should all of the funding come through, Dekker will find himself up against werewolves in Slaughter Road, written and directed by David Hayter (Watchmen). “To be honest, when I first got the script, all it said was ‘Untitled Werewolf Project’ and I didn’t know who was doing it. I didn’t even want to look at it until my manager said to read it. I read it and really liked it.” The film is the first production to come out of Hayter’s Dark Hero Studios. “He wants the werewolves to be beautiful, like Alien and H.R. Giger’s design.” Hold on a second there…”beautiful”? “They’re still werewolves, they’re like the Alien movies to me where these things will rip your face off, but they’re beautiful in their way, too. Horror fans don’t have to worry.”
Dekker will be joined by Ray Stevenson and a female lead is currently being sought. You can next see Dekker in Laid to Rest when it hits DVD on April 21st.
