Slim selection this month…
Choice Cuts is a list of your grade-A horror-related “best bets” for the month across the board – theatrical fare, DVD (new or re-issues), special signings and revival screenings. Currently, all events listed below are located within the Los Angeles area, however, if you’re the organizer of an upcoming special event, contact us HERE to be included in future editions of Choice Cuts. As a reminder, you can click on the film titles for full cast and crew details, plot synopsis, photos, trailers and reviews (if available). Look for subsequent Choice Cuts to appear the first day of every month. For a complete list of releases this month visit Shock’s database.
Note: This month’s offering of new films is slim because a.) I didn’t care much for what is arriving in the theaters or on DVD or b.) I was never presented screenings of some films (for example: Horsemen and Shuttle).
The Last House on the Left: A full review is in the works. What I’ll say now is this is much better than what I expected of a remake to the 1972 film. Of course, it will give rise to a divisive opinion from the genre community (remakes always do). I had a few problems with it on a thematic level, still, it will get a fairly positive critique from me.
Let the Right One In (March 10th, Magnet Releasing): Tomas Alfredson’s touching, violent and eccentric love story about a young boy and his vampire companion also arrives on Blu-Ray this same day. Just buy it. Personally, I’m one of the few who thought the praise for the film was blown out of proportion, but it’s a solid film from beginning to end.
Cat in the Brain (March 31st, Grindhouse Releasing): A terrific 2-disc special edition of Fulci’s mind-bender that’s oozing with extras and a new hi-def transfer of the uncensored director’s cut. It also sports a hypnotizing lenticular cover featuring the famous black feline digging into a hollowed out skull – so know that when you’re done gazing at the artwork there is a disc inside with content that’s just as good.
Timecrimes (March 31st, Magnet Releasing): Another 2008 gem from the folks at Magnet. If you missed this twisty-turny trip, do yourself a favor and check it out. The protagonist is an amiable fella and the hole he digs for himself is one laden with the usual perils one faces with time travel. Doc Brown, he’s not.
Autopsy (March 31st, Lionsgate Home Entertainment): Adam Gierasch’s directorial debut throws you into a familiar set-up (kids crash car and are whisked away to an ominous location, in this case a hospital) then takes a few wild and surreal turns complete with malevolent nurses, body parts and the lovely Jessica Lowndes of 90210 going through some pretty rough abuse.
Two Evil Eyes (March 31st, Blue Underground): In 1990, Dario Argento and George Romero decided to be bunk mates and make an anthology film together. The results are messy but nonetheless entertaining (I get a kick out of it). Blue Underground is presenting this title for the first time on Blu-Ray.
Saturday, March 7th @ 2pm (Dark Delicacies): Artist James Craig signs the graphic novel Freddy Vs. Jason Vs. Ash . For more details, click here!
