Playing the villainous Murlough
Universal’s adaptation of Cirque du Freak (set visit preview) arrives in theaters next year featuring a cast that’s as eclectic as the characters that populate Darren Shan’s source novel.
Brought to the screen by writer Brian Helgeland and director Paul Weitz, the film stars John C. Reilly, Ken Watanabe, Chris Massoglia, Josh Hutcherson and Patrick Fugit. And let’s not forget Ray Stevenson, cinema’s new Punisher, hitting theaters today in Punisher: War Zone. In Cirque, the actor drops the guns and dons fangs as “Murlough and he’s a vampinese so he’s again on the dark side of the vampires. John C. Reilly’s character is a vampire who’s sort of on the nice side of vampires. It’s great.”
Regarding the film’s take on bloodsuckers, Stevenson tells Crave Online, “Paul said earlier on, I don’t want any Transylvania, I don’t want any references to others. This is a completely new take. Staying as true as much to Darren Shan’s books. So we have a lot of fun with it.”
Cirque du Freak tells of a teenager whose life becomes entangled with a vampire and the freak show he travels with. For Crave’s full chat with Stevenson click here.
