Newspaper thinks it’s time
An editorial piece in the Australian newspaper Herald-Sun is having Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans clucking over the prospect of a feature film. Here’s what they say:
“The monster success of girly vampire pic Twilight at the US Box office last weekend could kick open the door for a big-screen return of Joss Whedon’s much-loved Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Rumours are circulating in Hollywood that Whedon has a feature-film script based on his hit TV series ready to roll as soon as a studio is prepared to commit. The Buffy concept was first unveiled as a movie in 1992 with long-forgotten Kristy Swanson in the title role.”
Let’s look at the reality of this before jumping to conclusions that this is legit. First off, the Herald-Sun’s piece is pure editorial. It’s hypothesizing that Twilight‘s success COULD open the doors to a feature… Could. That’s like if we said, “Hmm, The Strangers‘ big box office profit could open the door to more masked killer flicks!” Secondly, Whedon has been expanding the Buffy universe (“season 8,” as he calls it) through the ongoing Dark Horse Comics. Besides, there have been talks of a feature (for theaters and TV), and Whedon’s had a tough enough time getting that rolling.
Just a few things to keep in mind.
