Mignola’s High on Witchfinder Series

The adventures of Edward Grey

Hellboy big daddy Mike Mignola is currently exploring the realm of a character known as the Witchfinder. “It’s set in the Hellboy world in 1872. I introduced a Victorian occult detective a billion years ago in a panel of Hellboy and then I used him for ten pages in a recent Abe Sapien mini-series, so now we’re getting around to doing this guy,” Mignola tells us during a Hollywood bash timed for the DVD release of Hellboy II: The Golden Army.

That paranormal investigator he speaks of is Edward Grey and readers can get a taste of his adventures in Dark Horse Presents #16 for free at MySpace.com/darkhorsepresents. Mignola says this is only the beginning of his exploration into Grey’s life. “I just wrote the first issue of the first mini-series the other day. The first mini-series takes place in London, the second mini-series, which I’m co-writing with John Arcudi of B.P.R.D., that’ll take place in the Old West and the third one which I’ll come back and write will take place in Paris and other weird places. It’s the last big character that hasn’t gotten the limelight in the Hellboy world, but it’s a guy I’ve wanted to do for a long time. I’m really excited about it.”

Mignola takes that further by adding if there were any character in the Hellboy world he’d love to see get a feature film of their own, it’s Edward Grey all the way. “It’s a very old school, old fashioned subtle Victorian era, fog, Sherlock Holmes-y thing. Nobody makes those movies. I’d love to see one like that get made. It could be genuinely spooky.”
