Censors unclear on requested cuts
In spite of his best efforts, Rob Cohen still managed to piss China off. “How” is the unknown factor.
Censors in China are requesting cuts be made to Cohen’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor before its admitted into theaters. The State Administration for Radio, Film and Television won’t offer further details, Universal’s rep seem optimistic things will work out and Edko Films, Universal’s distributor in Hong Kong and China, is taking a “it’s too early to talk about it” stance.
The latest Mummy takes place and was lensed in China. As Variety is right to note, narratives featuring ghosts are now a big no-no in China (read here), however, The Mummy features a more fantastical element.
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, starring Brenden Fraser, Jet Li, Maria Bello, Michelle Yeo and Luke Ford, opens in the U.S. on August 1st.
