Opens far better than expected
Although reviews were generally bad across the board, M. Night Shyamalan’s 8th movie The Happening has exceeded most expectations with an opening day of $12.8 million, pointing to an opening weekend greater than $30 million. While it’s weaker than some of Shyamalan’s previous opening days, notably Signs and The Village, it’s far from the box office disappointment of his previous movie Lady in the Water and shows that he still has a dedicated fanbase who’ll ignore scathing reviews to check out whatever the controversial filmmaker might do. The film was especially of interest to horror fans due to the horrifying premise and Shyamalan being allowed to go untethered with the gore thanks to his first-ever R-rating. Check back tomorrow for the weekend estimates
