Surprising news on the remake
It’s no secret that Michael Haneke’s Funny Games is being remade. What is a big eyebrow-raiser is the scoop that “Games” is a shot-for-shot remake of the 1997 film. A Fangoria correspondent caught up to the redux’s producer Linda Moran over the weekend and learned returning writer-director Haneke went to great lengths to reproduce everything that made his first skin-crawling film work, right down to scrutinizing the blueprints for the original’s house set. “We went on a soundstage and built a set that matched those proportions exactly,” Moran tells the magazine. “Then we had to go out and find an exterior that would work as well. We shot in the Hamptons, at Shelter Island and southern Long Island.”
The locale proved to be an unsuspectingly idyllic location for the film’s grisly subject of torture. At the center of it all are actors Naomi Watts and Tim Roth, a couple trapped within their home with malicious trespassers Michael Pitt and Brady Corbet. That’s when Warner Independent Pictures is planning to play its Funny Games.
