Casting on Death Race Begins!

Who’s buckling up for remake?

Action’s favorite tough guy-of-the-moment, Jason Statham (Crank), is expected to take the lead in Paul W.S. Anderson’s Death Race remake. In the 1975 original, Death Race 2000, a variety of drivers, each with humorously broad personalities, compete against each other in a televised race. During the bloody event, they rack up points by hitting innocent bystanders.

Whether Anderson will stay true to the zany Roger Corman-produced and Paul Bartel-directed pic – and retain its focus on a famed driver known as “Frankenstein” (and played by star David Carradine) – is unknown right now. Anderson is scripting the film for Universal, Tom Cruise and Paul Wagner’s C/W Productions and Impact Pictures.

The Death Race redux has been idling at the starting line for some time now. THR says principal photography may begin late-summer/early-fall.
