More Birds Remake Squawk

Shooting begins this fall

Mandalay Pictures head Cathy Schulman spoke recently to Variety about the production company’s new take on Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds.

“We think we have a very contemporary take,” Schulman told the Hollywood trade paper. “In the original, the birds just showed up, and it was kind of like, why are the birds here? This time, there’s a reason why they’re here and (people) have had something to do with it. There’s an environmental slant to what could create nature fighting back.”

Other entities involved in The Birds redux include Universal Studios (natch) and Platinum Dunes’ Brad Fuller and Andrew Form, the duo who have produced the most recent “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” films and this year’s The Hitcher. Schulman says principal photography is expected to begin in early fall.

Over the last few months Fuller and Form have expressed interest in getting actress Naomi Watts (King Kong) to star, but nothing has been solidified.
