Speculation is growing over whether Elon Musk will be stepping down from his role leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Report claims he may be leaving soon since he faces a strict service limit. However, Musk and the White House have denied these claims.

Here is what Musk has to say about his departure from DOGE.

Elon Musk responds to rumors that he’s leaving DOGE

Elon Musk has responded to speculation about his exit from DOGE, denying reports that he is stepping down. A Politico report claimed Musk would have to step down by late May due to the legal 130-day limit on his role as a special government employee. However, both Musk and the White House have dismissed these reports, emphasizing that he will remain in his position until his objectives are met.

On Wednesday, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said, “Elon Musk and President Trump have both publicly stated that Elon will depart from public service as a special government employee when his incredible work at Doge is complete.” Meanwhile, Musk called the claims “fake news” on X (formerly Twitter).

Donald Trump also commented on Monday, acknowledging Musk’s contributions. He stated, “He’s got a big company to run… at some point he’s going to be going back. I’d keep him as long as I could keep him.” (via The Hill)

Since its launch in January, DOGE has pushed significant government restructuring, leading to mass layoffs across federal agencies. The initiative has cut tens of thousands of jobs, including 10,000 at the Department of Health and Human Services alone. Another report indicates that more than 56,000 positions have already been eliminated, with further reductions planned. While Musk claims these measures have saved billions, critics question the accuracy of those figures.

The public response to DOGE has been mixed. Polls show low approval ratings for Musk and the initiative. Critics have raised concerns about Musk’s involvement, citing conflicts of interest due to his companies’ government contracts.
