Mia Love, the first Black Republican woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, died Sunday at age 49.
Her family confirmed the news in a statement posted on her social media accounts. Love had been diagnosed with glioblastoma, a form of aggressive brain cancer, in 2022 and received treatment at Duke University’s brain tumor center. Her daughter recently shared that she was no longer responding to treatment.
Love died at her home in Saratoga Springs, Utah. “With grateful hearts filled to overflowing for the profound influence of Mia on our lives, we want you to know that she passed away peacefully,” her family stated.

Born in Brooklyn to Haitian immigrants, Love was raised in Norwalk, Connecticut, and graduated from the University of Hartford. She moved to Utah, joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and entered politics in 2003 by winning a seat on the Saratoga Springs City Council. She later became the city’s mayor.
After a narrow loss in 2012, she won a congressional seat in 2014, defeating Democrat Doug Owens. Following her victory, she said, “Many of the naysayers out there said that Utah would never elect a Black, Republican, LDS woman to Congress. Not only did we do it, we were the first to do it.” She served one term and was the only Black Republican in the Congressional Black Caucus.
Love distanced herself from Donald Trump during his 2016 campaign, refusing to attend the Republican National Convention and stating she would not vote for him. She endorsed Sen. Ted Cruz before he dropped out. In 2018, she lost her seat to Democrat Ben McAdams by fewer than 700 votes. Trump commented, “Mia Love gave me no love, and she lost.” (via ABC News)
