Why Is Dodgers’ Freddie Freeman Not Playing? Injury Explained

Freddie Freeman has been forced out of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ season opener due to a recent injury. The update on the first baseman’s exit from the MLB game was shared by the team on social media. The Dodgers are facing the Chicago Cubs at the Tokyo Dome to start the new season.

Freddie Freeman out of Dodgers season opener due to injury

Freddie Freeman was excluded from the Los Angeles Dodgers’ lineup just before the season opener against the Cubs.

The LA Dodgers made a tweet on X (formerly Twitter) regarding his exit, stating, “Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman was scratched from today’s lineup with left rib discomfort.”

Kiké Hernández was announced as Freeman’s replacement at first base. Freeman previously dealt with an ankle injury that caused him discomfort during the 2024 World Series. However, he still bagged MVP honors. In November 2024, Freeman underwent surgery for his ankle and played in all four Cactus League games.

Fans stormed on X to wish the MLB star a recovery. A fan wrote, “Have a speedy recovery Freddy! We need you!” Another user commented, “Tough break for Freeman and the Dodgers! Hoping it’s nothing serious and he bounces back soon.”

Freddie posted pictures of his arrival in Japan ahead of the game on Instagram.

The update comes after the Dodgers announced that their star shortstop, Mookie Betts, would also miss the two-game series against the Cubs. Betts’ exit was confirmed by the team’s manager, Dave Roberts, on Monday, March 17. The shortstop is currently dealing with an illness that has caused him to lose approximately 15 pounds.

According to a report by USA Today, Roberts conveyed, “He’s not going to play in these two games. When you’re dehydrated, that’s what opens a person up to soft tissue injuries. We’re very mindful of that.”
