What Is ‘March 2025 Meme Drought’ on TikTok? Explained

TikTok users have been flooding the platform with posts about the “March 2025 Meme Drought,” a trend that has sparked widespread discussion and creative responses. What began as a single video quickly gained momentum, leading to a wave of edits, reactions, and references across social media.

Here’s how it all started, how users responded, and why it became impossible to ignore.

What is ‘March 2025 Meme Drought’?

The ‘March 2025 Meme Drought,’ also called ‘The Great Meme Drought of 2025’ or ‘TikTok Great Depression March 2025,’ is an ironic TikTok trend. In this, users humorously claimed that no new viral memes appeared in March 2025.

The trend started on March 10, 2025, when a user @goofangel posted a video titled “TikTok Great Depression March 2025.” He stated, “Nine days into March and we haven’t had a single original meme.” The video gained over 883,000 views and 119,000 likes, sparking a wave of related content.

Goofangel’s video specifically referenced the resurgence of the ‘I Call Patrick Subaru’ meme, originally from March 2021, as evidence of the supposed drought. The trend quickly spread, with users creating posts mimicking historical events such as the 1929 Great Depression.

TikTok user @de.novo12 posted a compilation of Great Depression-era images on March 13 with the caption, “How the great March meme drought will be described in the history books.” The post earned over 5611 likes.

Another creator, shared an image overlaying TikTok influencers’ faces with the text, “When mfs say they grew up poor but never had to live during the great meme depression.” The post gained 142 likes.

On the same day, TikTok user @zachlath uploaded a video titled “How it feels to send bro TikToks during the great meme drought of 2025.” It amassed over 1.4 million likes.

Despite the ironic claims, new memes such as ‘Nah she got you blushing twin’ and ‘Dating a GM’ gained traction throughout the month.
