In addition to his Harry Potter gig, Fisher-Becker was also known for his role of Dorium Maldovar in Doctor Who. Moreover, his other credits included Tom Hooper’s ensemble Les Miserable and the comedy series Puppy Love.

So, who was Simon Fisher-Becker’s Fat Friar in Harry Potter, and what role did he play in the wizarding world? Here’s everything we know.

Simon Fisher-Becker’s Fat Friar in Harry Potter explained

Simon Fisher-Becker played Fat Friar in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, bringing to life the jovial ghost of Hufflepuff House.

The character was born sometime around 982 near the British Isles and joined the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry at 11 years old. He was sorted into Hufflepuff, which naturally put him under the tutelage of its founder Helga Hufflepuff. He was physically large and obese, implying he had a great love for food and drink. Despite his appearance, Fat Friar had incredible kindness.

Friar later became part of a religious order as a clergy. Unfortunately, his great kindness proved to be fatal as senior churchmen grew suspicious of and executed him. They became suspicious of him after he cured a pox by poking peasants with a stick. The suspicion was compounded by his habitual reckless tendency to pull rabbits out of the communion cup.

Following his demise, Friar became a house ghost for Hufflepuff students at Hogwarts Castle and wore a habit held together by a rope. He also ended up carrying a mug with him. While he enjoyed greeting students and offering guidance, he also harbored resentment over never being promoted to a cardinal.

Since he died before the events of the Harry Potter series, not much was known about his abilities. However, he possessed healing magic, wherein he could cure people of ailments by simply touching them with his wand.
