Elijah is an ancestor to Eli and his three children, Jessie, Kelvin, and Judy Gemstone. In the first episode, he is introduced as a non-religious man who has committed numerous offenses. However, when he faces a near-to-death experience, he began believing in faith. Initially, he was in danger, but posing as a chaplain ultimately saved his life.
He began perceiving faith as a special privilege to come out of distressing situations, regarding it to be a perfect con during the Civil War era. Later, Elijah discovers a soldier who knew him from Poker and was aware of his Confederate general’s fortune stealing activity. He befriends him but kills him later on as a measure to protect his con. Elijah’s most recent actions demonstrate how his dishonest and self-centered attitude has subtly influenced the entire family’s personalities.
Showrunner Danny McBride recently shared the reason for casting Cooper in the series in conversation with Variety. He revealed that he wanted Elijah to have a lasting charm and found the Hangover actor to be a perfect fit. “With Gemstones, all these actors that are involved in it — there has to be a level of charisma and charm, because these characters are doing such despicable things,” he said.
He adds, “If you cast someone who’s too dark or doesn’t have charm, it can be a little hard to watch. That’s the tightrope we always walk with ‘Gemstones’: making sure it’s fun, even though you’re rooting for people who are, you know, kind of shitty.”
The Righteous Gemstones Season 4 will premiere on Max (aka HBO Max).
