Introduced at the tail-end of Season 1 after multiple conversational mentions, Janet plays a prominent role in Season 2. Here, her life intertwines with that of the protagonist, Maddie Nears. Janet decided to stay in school in School Spirits Season 2 because she started empathizing with Maddie. She began empathizing with Maddie after understanding her strong bond with her friends.
This was confirmed by Jess Gabor in an interview with The Wrap. “When she’s in the cabin with all of Maddie’s friends, who clearly love Maddie enough to kidnap her, Janet doesn’t know what that’s like to have friends that have your back or what it’s like to trust somebody again,” Gabor added. The actress then spoke of how the one person Janet trusted in her life, Mr. Martin, not only abused her but also took advantage of her.
Gabor further stressed how Janet realized the error of her ways after hijacking Maddie’s body to escape the afterlife school. Moreover, she also talked about how Janet was a scientist and wanted answers. She then explained another reason Janet chose to stay behind. This reason was her new goal of helping the friends she made figure out how to move on from the afterlife.
Before choosing to stay at the school, Hamilton managed to overcome the trauma and abuse dealt to her by Mr. Martin and her own father. She also dealt with the trauma that came from her scar, which was her deathplace at the school.
