Jesse Eisenberg Receives Polish Citizenship After A Real Pain Oscar Win

Jesse Eisenberg has officially received Polish citizenship after the success of his movie A Real Pain, set in Poland. This decision holds deep personal significance for the actor, who has openly spoken about his connection to Poland and the impact of his family’s past.

Here are more details about it.

Jesse Eisenberg granted Polish citizenship

Eisenberg has officially become a Polish citizen. The citizenship was granted to him by Poland’s President Andrzej Duda in New York. The actor, director, and writer pursued citizenship as a way to reconnect with his family’s Polish roots. And it played a significant role in shaping his recent film, A Real Pain.

The movie is inspired by Eisenberg’s own family history. It follows two American cousins visiting Poland to honor their late grandmother, a Holocaust survivor. While working on the project, Eisenberg realized how much of his family’s past was tied to the country. This realization motivated him to apply for citizenship, which is available to those with direct Polish lineage.

At the ceremony where he was granted Polish citizenship, Eisenberg expressed his gratitude. He called it a deeply personal and meaningful honor. Further, the actor spoke about his family’s past and his wish to strengthen ties between Jewish and Polish communities. He said, “In addition to that tragedy of history was also the tragedy that my family didn’t feel any connection any more to Poland, and that saddened me and confirmed for me that I really wanted to try to reconnect as much as possible.” Eisenberg added, “I really hope that tonight and this ceremony and this amazing honor is the first step in me, on behalf of my family, reconnecting to this beautiful country.” (via The Independent)

President Duda praised Eisenberg’s efforts to acknowledge and preserve Polish history. He said, “I am delighted that people from across the ocean acknowledge their heritage, recognize that their ancestors hail from the Republic [of Poland] and seek to forge a connection with our country.” (via BBC)

Notably, Kieran Culkin recently won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in A Real Pain.
