In a surprising turn of events, veteran football analyst Jimmy Johnson has decided to embrace retirement from his stint at FOX Sports. Johnson originally transitioned into the field of broadcasting in the midst of a flourishing coaching career that saw him manage teams such as the Dallas Cowboys and the Miami Dolphins. However, after 31 years in the media industry, the NFL legend will effectively take a backseat from the spotlight come the end of the ongoing season.

Here’s everything you need to know regarding Jimmy Johnson’s retirement from FOX Sports.

Jimmy Johnson announces retirement from Fox Sports

The former football tactician announced his decision to step away from broadcasting during his recent appearance on The Herd with Colin Cowherd talk show. Confirming that the 2024 season would be his last one as an analyst, Johnson stated, “I’ve made an extremely difficult decision. I’ve been thinking about it for the last four or five years, and I’ve decided to retire from FOX. I’m gonna miss it. I’m gonna miss all the guys. It’s been a great run starting back 31 years ago,” as per FOX News.

FOX Sports CEO Eric Shanks also took out time to give a heartfelt tribute to Jimmy Johnson on his retirement. “Jimmy Johnson was there when ‘FOX NFL SUNDAY’ came on-air for the first time 31 years ago, and since then has been a cherished member of our FOX Sports family, which makes today’s retirement news bittersweet,” Shanks noted. The FOX executive then lauded Johnson for his “legendary swagger, one-of-a-kind insight, and signature humor,” before thanking the iconic coach for his “contributions in making ‘FOX NFL SUNDAY’ the top pregame show on TV.”

Johnson originally joined forces with FOX Sports in 1994 after parting ways with the head coach position at the Miami Dolphins. He accompanied Terry Bradshaw and Howie Long in the pregame show’s initial run before Michael Strahan and Rob Gronkowski joined the panel in later years. Following Jimmy Johnson’s retirement, Bradshaw and Long are the only two analysts from the original team who continue to feature in FOX’s NFL coverage.
