Final Jeopardy Answer for February 20

The correct answer for Final Jeopardy on February 20, 2025 is “What is Albuquerque, New Mexico?”

Today’s clue is rather tough since it’s really a factoid. There are a lot of four-syllable cities in the southwestern United States, so stumbling on Albuquerque isn’t likely unless you know about the historical connection here. The city (which was a settlement at the time) got its name in 1706 in honor of Fernández de la Cueva or the 10th Duke of Alburquerque after a city in southwest Spain. It was called Alburquerque, or La Villa de Alburquerque, with the extra “r” until it was incorporated into the United States in 1891, at which point the “r” was dropped.
