Pakistan’s campaign in the ICC Champions Trophy has been dealt a significant blow as opener Fakhar Zaman has been ruled out due to injury. The experienced left-hander sustained the injury during Pakistan’s opening match of the tournament. Despite his efforts to continue playing, the setback has forced him out of the competition.
Here is more about Fakhar Zaman’s injury.
How did Fakhar Zaman get injured?
Pakistan suffered a major setback in the Champions Trophy as opener Fakhar Zaman was ruled out due to injury. The incident took place during Pakistan’s opening match against New Zealand at Karachi’s National Stadium. While fielding in the first over, Fakhar attempted to stop a boundary. However, he landed awkwardly after diving, immediately signaling for medical assistance. Though he later batted at No. 4, his discomfort was evident as he managed just 24 runs off 41 balls. Pakistan ultimately lost the match by 60 runs.
Following medical evaluation, Fakhar was diagnosed with chest muscular pain and ruled out of the tournament. His absence adds to Pakistan’s troubles, as they were already missing opener Saim Ayub due to an ankle injury. To fill the gap, the ICC has approved Imam-ul-Haq as Fakhar’s replacement. Imam, who last played an ODI for Pakistan in October 2023, now has a chance to make an impact in the tournament.
Fakhar addressed his exit on social media, expressing his disappointment but promising to return stronger. He wrote on X, formerly Twitter, “Representing Pakistan on the biggest stage is an honor and dream of every cricketer in this country. I have been privileged enough to represent Pakistan multiple times with pride. This is only just the beginning, the comeback will be stronger than the setback.” His absence creates further challenges for Pakistan’s batting lineup as they look to recover from a tough start in the tournament.
